I love it when people tell me a startup idea that goes against most current trends.

Okay! In today’s clickbaity, personalised world of aggregated news led by Facebooks and TikToks, how about an app that smartly aggregates varied & distinct perspectives about every news topic to help get users out of echo-chamber?

The problem is, that's not what most people want, and so it wouldn't grow. I think there is a way to solve this problem, but it's by making a new version of the neutral "paper of record" the NYT used to be. Not sure though.

Current problems arriving at a balanced and informed public is something that should be solved politically rather than with naked market forces. The elimination of the Fairness Doctrine + failure to sustainably monetise news on the Internet drives the failure of balanced news.

Not really. It is the abundance of information from multiple sources that makes ppl 'congregate' around what confirms their views (ideological bias). When given a choice, very few ppl like to read something telling them they are wrong.

Hmm.. learnt that the hard way but thought it’s with Indian consumers that they are more biased than rational; I see the solution in more of a psychological game. Other approach you suggested may’ve unit-economics issues & scalability blockers- reason media houses r loss making

I think this is right and I think when it becomes clear that a lot of what has been reported over the last few years was accurate people will start to re consume media and see it as [if not neutral] a trusted source of the record.

@paulg my bet is on branded and editorialized vertical social networks which bring communities (or people with commonalities) together over shared values... and that’s what we’re pioneering for the LGBT community at @hornet

The nytimes app for Android is amazing. They lost their mojo for a while in the transition to digital, but no longer. NPR News Brief is another good format for digital reporting that is super well integrated for today's tech savvy population.

Most mornings I just say "Ok Google, News Brief" and get all the top stories in 10 min. It's also available as a podcast in my car. I think quality news coverage from reputable sources is beginning to differentiate again due to more investment in digital. I'm optimistic.

Fyi, you should run your website by a 10 year old and re-write every word they don't understand. On a side note, I think this will amplify fakenews not solve it...it amplifies the broken incentives of fake news in the first place (assuming I have any idea what you do)
