People often ask how long I spend on essays. On average about 2 days per printed page. But it varies a lot. "The Refragmentation" (http://paulgraham.com/re.html ) took 3 months, because it required a lot of research, and "Writing, Briefly" (http://paulgraham.com/writing44.html ) took 67 minutes.

just curious PG - why did you decide to get back into writing essays?
-
He only stopped writing essays so that he could focus on bel. Now that that's done he's writing again.

Interesting, how practical is this for you though? How much paper would you expect to go through per essay?

Do you think future generations will find inherit value in physical media? Or do you think modern generations raised on electronics will eschew it and eventually disregard it altogether?
-
Physical things seem deeply pleasing. They're not as flexible as software, so software wins because you can do more with it. But maybe physical things will be more flexible in the future, and then they'll start to win again.

+1 to that. You can't scribble with a keyboard.

I find that I can replicate the better editing feel of paper using an iPad and apple pencil. This then allows me to keep everything electronic.

I wonder if it’s because we subconsciously associate reading on screens with work and therefore skim for the sake of efficiency... or if it’s a more physiologic process at play (contrast between letters and background harder to distinguish w screen light)

I personally feel that it's the fact that things are easy to change digitally so no real need to look for mistakes, but the printed page feels final so any mistake jumps out. Same way you only realize half your mistakes after you've submitted your thesis.
