When someone replies to a statement you made by calling you names, they're implicitly saying that's it's true. Otherwise they could have shown why you were wrong.

Because some people are in a position of influence and what they say has a negative effect on other people. Ad hominems are not the best way of arguing a point, but most people aren't taught how to debate. By dismissing the person who has made it you miss learning something.
