I don't know for sure, but there are a lot of babies in used bookshops that I can imagine getting thrown out with the bathwater by someone clueless (= someone who hasn't spent hundreds of hours in used bookshops) trying to make something "better."

That could be an interesting essay topic, because it seems quite unintuitive (to me, anyway). I’d have imagined that being in a used book store would correlate with (past) popularity not necessarily quality. Similar for how used the book itself is.
