If someone mentions your race or sex or ethnicity when criticizing you, you can usually assume that this is the real reason they dislike you.

Really disappointing tweet, Paul. As the black man in the excellent book White Fragility says, “if you can’t talk about race, you’re not going to be much help to me in fighting racism.” Also, everything happens in context & your race/gender are a big part of that context.

I'm not saying you can't talk about race. Just that if someone says something mistaken, it's sufficient to explain why it's mistaken, without also mentioning their race or gender, or anything else about them for that matter.

Sometimes it's really not sufficient, because sometimes the race/gender/class of the speaker is highly relevant to why they had it wrong.

Paul, you can debate the specific alleged connections between your ideas & your positionality, but I don’t think you should try to write the rules to demand ideas be debated in a vacuum.

Paul has has clearly transcended race, and has become a being of pure money.

"You can talk about the problem as long as you don't mention the problem in any way that's remotely specific." Got it.

Or more precisely, it's okay to mention *that* they're mistaken as long as you steer clear of *why* they're mistaken.

If the mistake or harm is caused by racial in-group behavior or thinking, or erroneous race narratives, it may be pertinent. It’s not rarely effective to address these things using vague or generalized language.

A corollary to this is people have a wide range of perceptions about what errors or harm are due to bias or race narratives, while at the same time research shows even banal things like school discipline, investment, real estate and banking are permeated with biased behavior.

Should we equate criticism to dislike?

This is a restatement of the rule against ad hominem. If most of one can muster in criticism of an idea is a criticism of the person saying it -- if the criticism would be avoided by another person saying it -- then it's not about the idea.
