there has to be tension & conflict, otherwise there's no movement or interest. But this doesn't necessarily have to mean controversy. Controversy is a special form of tension & conflict between camps

Twitter mobs might just be an early form of "free market justice" by which a society can enforce social norms rather than enforce w/ laws (a plus). Like many early markets it is quite inefficient, but as participants we collectively decide the equilibrium.
