Really disappointing tweet, Paul. As the black man in the excellent book White Fragility says, “if you can’t talk about race, you’re not going to be much help to me in fighting racism.” Also, everything happens in context & your race/gender are a big part of that context.

I'm not saying you can't talk about race. Just that if someone says something mistaken, it's sufficient to explain why it's mistaken, without also mentioning their race or gender, or anything else about them for that matter.

When MLK Jr. wrote he was "gravely disappointed with the white moderate" in his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail", was he actually just mad about them being white?pic.twitter.com/361CnxtsYe

He wasn't criticizing a specific person.

You can always assume everything, but the core truth is that it's all about the intention of the person who is saying it.

What I mean is, you can safely assume.

Or alternatively, they’re pointing out that your comments may come from a position of privilege and you may not be aware of the experiences of other people.

Pointing out someone may not understand the experiences of the poor, or of people of color, or of members of the LGBT community or whatever, does not mean they dislike rich people, white people, or straight people.

I've always viewed ad-hominem attacks as a signal that the other side has run out of data to validate their point. We see this in political shouting these days (I really can't call it debate or discourse). We also see it sometimes when blaming age or generational differences.

I'm not sure if you realize this, but the original tweet is a blanket ad hominem. A polymorphic dismissal of any argument that pushes this particular hot button. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tone_policing …
