One thing you can say for the GDPR: unlike a lot of EU regulations, it's not protectionist. It entrenches the power of established ad platforms, and because startups took off earlier in the US than in Europe, those are mostly in the US.

So the corollary is the similar (in many ways) CCPA is protectionist.

GDPR, a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy, had a significant negative effect on emerging European technology firms and increased Google’s monopoly power at the expense of smaller players. I think that's right, but I don't think that was their intention or even the anticipated result.

the EU seems to be way ahead of the rest when it comes to understanding the importance of data sovereignty. https://twitter.com/yslcrypto/status/1217807904901865473 … even if the first attempt has unintended consequences.

All attempts will have dominating nth order effects that will likely be unforeseen but the EU. They’re not VCs or technologists.

Definitely take a look at @garjoh_canuck’s research on this https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3477686 … starts to unpick at the mechanisms

Thanks @RDMetcalfe ! See my pinned post for more. I also disagree re: protectionism. In ongoing work, we point out that firms that serve a small share of EU customers engage in more costly compliance activity because fines are on their global not just EU revenue.
