Modern life was basically invented in the low countries and in northern Italy, and the Netherlands, at least, still seem to be in the lead.
The weird thing is that if you walk into a supermarket in Amsterdam you rarely see local produce, it's mostly imported, you can only get local produce from farmer markets.
