One novel consequence of the new paywall model of journalism is that only your subscribers even see your articles. It used to be that when an important article was published in a national newspaper, everyone concerned had read it. Now only subscribers have.

Was just discussing this the other day. I'd much rather see an a la carte model for articles with frictionless payments. My guess is the publications would fear uneven revenue streams.

The model promotes interesting dynamics around commentary/criticism of the article. Even thoughtful people can no longer be expected to a read an article before challenging it if the available summaries make unsubstantiated claims.

It becomes reasonable to attack the messenger if you dislike their message and find the parts they’ve made publicly available unpersuasive.

I’d pay for a content consolidator. Rather than subscribe to an entire publication for few good articles, rather one that curated to my taste. Publishers will have to be able to commoditise content at a more granular level tho. Same for TV.

How much original content does Google, Facebook or Twitter have to generate to keep their revenue stream going? They rely on other's content to generate revenue.

Journalism can possibly make this up by charging a simple amount (like 25 cents) to read an article. When we pay for the content it’s quality will go up. If all content stays free journalists will remain slaves to the public’s attention addiction of the day.

and all so you can read 1 article. The whole idea of an online "newspaper" makes no sense. Bundling was because of the medium of paper. Selling by the article makes more sense.
