You’re worth how many millions, yet unwilling to spend a few dollars a month on news to stay informed?https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1219911533070897153 …

One novel consequence of the new paywall model of journalism is that only your subscribers even see your articles. It used to be that when an important article was published in a national newspaper, everyone concerned had read it. Now only subscribers have.

Yep, and tons of other people too. It's not the money. It's the inconvenience. Who wants to fill out a long form for a subscription that auto-renews and you can't cancel without making a phone call, just to read one article?

You’re absolutely correct the experience should be more convenient. And it is getting a lot better.

If you merely offered a subscription that didn't auto-renew, that would be sufficient. And that is not a technical obstacle. That is a choice you made, and that you could change today if you wanted to.

Is there a non-renewing subscription in any category? Netflix, Spotify, gyms, grocery delivery, dating apps. Recurring revenue is the business model.

People will tolerate auto-renewing subscriptions on Netflix because they have to. What newspapers don't get is that they're not Netflix. They're one show on Netflix.

Newspapers think "We're the WSJ (or the NYT or the FT or the Washington Post...). We'll make everyone subscribe." But the way it looks to readers is "Ugh, I have to subscribe individually to each newspaper? Not worth it."

So what’s your solution for smaller newspapers without the global base of readers?

No one I know in news thinks we’re Netflix, but we do offer a lot of value, and once new members dig in and start consuming more of what we offer, they tend to stick around. We have some great new-member offers and would love you to join us!http://store.wsj.com

This is actually missing the main point in Netflix’s favor. Netflix converts potential customers in its hero section by bragging how easy it is to cancel before the trial ends, so you don’t have to pay anything if you don’t like it.

Apple News+ bundles a lot of newspapers and magazines (such as WSJ or the Atlantic) for a single price. Bundling might make it more viable for consumers
