In the print era, if there was an important article in e.g. the NYT, you'd often see a group of colleagues standing together reading it at the same time. Or you'd pass someone a copy of a newspaper or magazine and say "read this." That no longer happens.

It happens literally all the time — on Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp groups, email threads, gchats, Slacks, etc.

The first part happens, where you say "read this." The second part, where they actually read it, no longer happens unless they're also a subscriber.
