You’re worth how many millions, yet unwilling to spend a few dollars a month on news to stay informed?https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1219911533070897153 …

One novel consequence of the new paywall model of journalism is that only your subscribers even see your articles. It used to be that when an important article was published in a national newspaper, everyone concerned had read it. Now only subscribers have.

Yep, and tons of other people too. It's not the money. It's the inconvenience. Who wants to fill out a long form for a subscription that auto-renews and you can't cancel without making a phone call, just to read one article?

Exactly. I seriously started to fill out form at my desk then realized no PayPal, and would need to go find my wallet. Hassle, hassle, no thanks.

Plus newspapers don't have the monopoly on keeping people "informed" that they used to. I made all those millions without ever subscribing to the WSJ, so apparently it's optional. Books + free news sources seem to be sufficient.

Would you pay $3 - 5 more per subscription for a service that managed those tasks on your behalf? Auto-subscribe (pre-filled or via proxy), simple payment, auto-cancel (or opt-in renewal)?

You’re absolutely correct the experience should be more convenient. And it is getting a lot better.

If you merely offered a subscription that didn't auto-renew, that would be sufficient. And that is not a technical obstacle. That is a choice you made, and that you could change today if you wanted to.

And once you have paid to subscribe, they'll still insult you with their stupid paywall every time you click a link because they can't figure out how to identify their paying customers even though their ads can track everything you've ever looked at before.

To be frank I don't find newspaper subs that valuable. I pay for @stratechery and think it's a steal but won't pay half that for a subs to nyt or wapo. For any given month there might be 2-3 articles in those papers worth reading
