One novel consequence of the new paywall model of journalism is that only your subscribers even see your articles. It used to be that when an important article was published in a national newspaper, everyone concerned had read it. Now only subscribers have.

The Financial Times published an important (sounding) article about politics recently. I sent a link to a very well-connected Democratic donor in Silicon Valley. He couldn't read it because he's not an FT subscriber, and neither could I, because I'm not either.

Fwiw, I don't really understand the economics here. I don't subscribe to many outlets because they publish lots of stuff that I'm not interested in. I would pay for the occasional article, but that's not possible.

kind of ridiculous there's no payperview online newspaper model

Depends on what you mean by "there's no model". I recently looked at paywalls for my blog, and it's easy enough to find one that has an option for only-this-article for (say) $1. The mystery is why no newspaper uses such a model.

Fair enough, I meant “why has no newspaper tried this”. I suspect the answer is that some of them experiment with it and found the results lacking

It doesn't make sense to me because I could name like 10 magazines/newspapers on top of my head where, if I want to read a single article, I'll either block the paywall or, if that's not possible, ask around until I find someone to send me the piece for free.

Journalism now is like movies before Netflix etc. People "pirate" their stuff, and they imagine it's to avoid paying, but the real reason is that it's more convenient.

I would probably have stopped reading the New York Times completely by now if I hadn't figured out a way around their paywall.
