This is a failure on the journalism industry for not innovating on monetization and on engineers/banking for dropping the ball on making payments a first-class citizen on the internet. Thankfully, after two decades, it seems like some progress is being made on both ends.

So what's the solution? I don't like ads. I want to support great, unbiased journalism. I also believe that news should be accessible to everyone, even those who cannot pay the subscription fees. So hybrid model? Ad-free for those who can pay, ads for those who can't?

Also, I've often wanted to pay for just the article I want to read. For ex, $1 or $2 for 1 FT article directly from Apple Pay or something similar.
