The Financial Times published an important (sounding) article about politics recently. I sent a link to a very well-connected Democratic donor in Silicon Valley. He couldn't read it because he's not an FT subscriber, and neither could I, because I'm not either.
The paywall model may keep publications from going out of business, but it greatly decreases their influence. Now they're just newsletters.

This is gonna get much worse very fast. And it's yet to hit developing markets. The control and misinformation might make them echo chambers with an agenda, and true journalism will be a lost art.

its quite an issue indeed, it creates small sects of followers of specific media outlets, it is not uncommon to hit many paywalls on the same day

Fwiw, I don't really understand the economics here. I don't subscribe to many outlets because they publish lots of stuff that I'm not interested in. I would pay for the occasional article, but that's not possible.
