One reason startups are on average less evil than other businesses is that the best way to start a startup is to make something you yourself want, and founders aren't masochists.

Ditto. As I scan the landscape I see three common diversions from these altruistic beginnings: 1) troubling infringement on user privacy as a revenue tactic 2) extractive platform structure where front line workers are defacto exploited 3) unsustainable price structures

Not sure this is true. Amazon, Facebook and Google have all acted "evil" even though they have continued to provide products their founders wanted at some point.
