If you ask parents what they want for their kids, many will say "I just want them to be happy." But there are drugs that achieve this, and taking them results in disaster. So that is probably not what we should want.
(Thanks to @moigottweets for pointing this out to me.)

“soma”. But it is the govt machine not parents pushing the drug, since they also do away with any natural sense of parents...

I think you're assuming negative side-effects that are present with some real drugs, but are not actually part of the hypothetical presented. You just said a drug that makes people happy. That could be long-term, deep happiness without any negative effects. Need not be disastrous

Why? I take caffeine and alcohol. If I could take something that made me happy, why wouldn't I do it? -- Not this isn't the same as something that prevents sadness

I think you’re imagining a sort of wirehead scenario as your nightmare outcome. If there were a drug that could tweak us so we could have a sunnier disposition safely and effectively I think that would be good, although I know this isn’t your point.

There are people who are brilliant and successful but cursed with a seemingly genetic depression and I wouldn’t want that for a child.
