When does an article become an essay? I’ve never been able to identify the inflection point.
An essay is a specific type of article, written in order to try to figure something out. That's where the name comes from: essayer is French for try.

In portuguese, it's 'Ensaio', which we also roughly translate to: the practice before a play, by the actors, or a concert, by the musicians.

"try" as "test" or "attempt"? (in French)
Because in Spanish and Portuguese the substantives ("ensayo/ensaio") and respective verbs ("ensayar/ensaiar") are commonly used more like last-training/rehearsing. Besides the formal writing piece as well. Fun detail: [1/2] -
despite the same origin, only in jokes a writer uses the verb "ensayar/ensaiar" to signify that s/he is writing an "ensayo/ensaio". I wonder if something similar happens in French.
