Up til now, the only fully privately funded supersonic plane in history is Virgin Galactic's SpaceShip. Insane.

Why? I mean, I know to make money, but this feels like a terrible step backwards. Allowing a privileged few access to near-instantaneous travel, while being the least energy efficient way to get around.

Seriously, the website feels like it’s from a science fiction movie, highlighting how the excesses and hubris of the elite lead to the disaster.

It's easy to ridicule overconfidence. And indeed, it has its disadvantages. But it's just what you need if you want to take on a problem most rational people would conclude was too hard. Fools dare where angels fear to tread, and sometimes they win.

People don't understand that what first is available only to wealthy few, in couple years can be available and affordable for the general population. But first you have to allow those few rich people to be able to use it so the whole endeavour is profitable and can grow.

That line of reasoning didn't help the Concorde. It was too wasteful even for the jet set and withered away.
