Why? I mean, I know to make money, but this feels like a terrible step backwards. Allowing a privileged few access to near-instantaneous travel, while being the least energy efficient way to get around.

People don't understand that what first is available only to wealthy few, in couple years can be available and affordable for the general population. But first you have to allow those few rich people to be able to use it so the whole endeavour is profitable and can grow.

That line of reasoning didn't help the Concorde. It was too wasteful even for the jet set and withered away.
