It's easy to ridicule overconfidence. And indeed, it has its disadvantages. But it's just what you need if you want to take on a problem most rational people would conclude was too hard. Fools dare where angels fear to tread, and sometimes they win.

"Believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart even when it leads you off the well-worn path. And that will make all the difference." - Steve Jobs, 2005

Survivorship bias reminder: the most important word you used is "sometimes". Not that there is anything wrong with it - but it is crucial to be fully aware of the odds and the fact no-one is "special" before committing to any overconfident, foolish, and -why not- adventurous gig.

True. It's a fact that true blue VCs do seek out entrepreneurs who set themselves audacious goals. Problem is, many entrepreneurs seem to think that overconfidence in huge measure can put them on the path to glory. Behaving like Steve Jobs wont make you Steve Jobs :-)

But being stopped in your tracks by self-doubt won't, either.

        >It's easy to ridicule overconfidence If the success of the "fake it til you make it" strategy is any indication, I would point out it may be easy to ridicule overconfidence, but it might not actually be done enough.

Depends why I don't like them. If it's because they seem evil, no. If they're merely annoying, that wouldn't stop me.
