In truth though it's not fair to imply this bill was ideologically driven. This was apparently a classic old-style back-room deal between the Teamsters and California Democrats. The Teamsters want to capture Uber and Lyft drivers, and to do that they have to be employees.

All the harm done to other types of freelancers in California was merely collateral damage of the Teamsters' pursuit of Uber and Lyft.

In 1950 the Teamsters were so powerful they could have prevented Uber and Lyft from existing at all, except on their terms. By 2050 they won't be able to stop anyone doing anything. Now we are in an intermediate phase where the fight still happens, but messily.

I think the key here is to ban non-consenting economic relationships, just like you'd ban non-consenting sexual relationships. Not all economic relationships are consenting; some are very exploitive.

Well, we banned indentured servitude 150 years ago, do you think that was a mistake?

I think this bill is terrible, but I definitely don't think the government should stay out of any interference in any kind of economic relationship.

This bill would ban many more economic relationships than just for journalism; the only reason we're not hearing about those is that unlike journalists, the immigrants driving for Uber don't have access to our collective ears.

It's actually about shifting the power from capital to labor. That doesn't mean AB5 is perfect though.

Reducing the number of options I have as labor doesn't shift power to me.
