There is something to that, but they can hurt you regardless if you work for particularly craven employer, like a university.

Oh yes, this was addressed to the employers themselves. People under them definitely can get in trouble. I think this is all mostly a coordination problem: nobody would have to care about mobs if nobody cared about them — even in a group where nobody agrees with them
