I’m frustrated that so much science fiction ignores relativity or imagines that it is proven false. If you ditch science then your characters might as well be casting fireball spells at a magical dragon.

Agreed. A big part is that characters' behaviors and decisions must make sense. And second to that is internal consistency. Things may not be scientifically accurate, but they must be consistent. This applies even to magic in fantasy stories.
