I maintain one such project — http://diaryemail.com . You write to private@diaryemail.com or reply to daily reminders to add an entry to the diary. You can also invite close friends and family and write to friends@diaryemail.com to relay the email to them.
It looks like I have to initiate the emails though. I can't just reply to an email it sends me each day. Is that correct?
You can! But you need to sign in and enable the reminder in the settings first.
