There is unfortunately a long history of hiding the method, and often not because of mal intent. Archimedes had a method that looked like calculus, but would only use it to find the answer, never to publicly prove that answer. The "completed infinities" it used weren't accepted
It has often seemed to me that Newton's unfussiness about infinitesimals was one of his secret weapons.

Apparently even he sometimes thought it was a trick for find the answer but too improper for publishing and committing to posterity.
