This is really good. When you're trying to do something new and it's not working, you don't know whether that's because it's impossible, or you just got some minor detail wrong. http://johnsalvatier.org/blog/2017/reality-has-a-surprising-amount-of-detail …

What’s the best way for a founder to tell if the idea is dead in the water vs needs tweaks?
-
The only way is to try the most promising tweaks. (That's one place YC can help incidentally, because the partners have so much experience that they can often guess which tweaks will work.)

Curious what were the 4 tweaks? I’ll take a guess: - Extending beyond airbeds - Quality photos - Prepayments - the Craigslist supply hack
-
Better photos, better descriptions, teaching hosts how much to charge, more listings in NYC.

What changed that trajectory? Just talking to customers?

If you saw them as dead, and themselves did so as well, why did you take them into YC? Assuming you couldn’t think they were several tweaks away.
-
Most startups are dead in the sense of not having any growth yet when they start YC. The only difference with the Airbnbs was that they'd been this way longer.

This suggests that “it’s been tried before” is only valid at quite a high resolution.
