Hans Magnus Enzenbsberger, a German author, wrote an enlightening essay about "radical losers" in 2005 that I can recommend. Part of the context for it was terrorism, but I think it holds general insights related to your essay: http://www.signandsight.com/features/493.html …
That is an interesting essay, but I don't think haters are as extreme as the sort of people he talks about.

Ah, yeah definitely not, more like a precursor maybe. I don't know, your essay just reminded me of his observation that "it's my fault" and "the others are responsible" are not mutually exclusive feelings and can reinforce each other in a really unhealthy way in people.

Successful and famous persons, but also minorities and other scape goats then have to act as a stand-in for the amorphous 'system' or 'the other' that in their mind inflicted these slights of the past on them.
