A barista once told me she liked people who order decaf because "you know they're the ones who really like the taste of coffee for coffee's sake" I love this kind of thing, a tiny viewquake from someone thoughtful, delivered with no fanfare during the minutiae of everyday life

If you want to get more of them, try asking people explicitly what their work taught them that outsiders don't know. I often do this.

You need a setting where they aren't too busy to ask this, right? Isn't it awkward to ask people those questions while they're busy doing what they do? I'm just trying to understand the environment when you ask them that question.

Good question. It doesn't have to be while they're on the job. Here are a few. -Uber/Lyft ride -family gathering -haircut (I had someone cut my hair who was getting a PI license!) -meetups Plus, people have areas of expertise that aren't work-related.

Same. I do this with Uber drivers, for example. If it's an airport run, there's plenty of time to learn from them. My last two drivers taught me about railroad maintenance and Ford's long-term production strategy!

also, Michael, we used this as an opening question for a think-pair-share at YConf when Andy and I ran a session. Wish I had record of all the answers, they were 🔥🔥🔥

That's a nice direct question, which I'll try Upon reflection, it's amazing how my life has been enriched by encountering surprise expertise; each time, it's a little gift. Among many: in a mattress store, a personal finance expert driving a cab, etc etc...

Oh, that reminds me of Studs Terkel's famous "Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Working_(Terkel_book) … (I honestly didn't enjoy it as much as expected, but I was admittedly probably over-excited to read...) cc @sriramk
