10 yo confessed that when he impressed me as a little kid by reading a whole book for the first time, he'd actually memorized it. He wasn't trying to trick me. He thought that was what reading was.

Inglish reeding IS oll abot memorizing arbitary spelling conventions. :-D

Japanese kids do the same with English words. They memorise the shape of English words the same way as they do with Chinese characters. Until they learn English phonics which allows them to sound words out
