When we see the final work of a builder or an artist, we are often seeing the final results. Masked are the things thrown away or hidden because they weren’t proud of it. The inspiration we feel with the final work often lacks the perspective & discipline it takes to get there.
This is one reason I usually prefer drawings to the paintings derived from them. And drawings are way cheaper too.
@WalterIsaacson ‘s da Vinci book has a lot of those details. For each painting, x-ray studies of what’s underneath (early mistakes, changes, etc) and possible explanations. It’s great.
