The sort of intentional misrepresentation you see online is a new territory socially. There aren't customs for dealing with it yet, or antibodies to prevent it. Solutions will probably evolve, but I'm not sure what they'll look like.

I’ve always considered it an extension of the strawman argument. They’re reconstructing and misconstruing your point into something that they already have argumentative ammo for.
