There's not even a term for it yet I get the feeling the advent of the "humblebrag" significantly reduced humblebragging
The sort of intentional misrepresentation you see online is a new territory socially. There aren't customs for dealing with it yet, or antibodies to prevent it. Solutions will probably evolve, but I'm not sure what they'll look like.

The score is the game. The score is likes and retweets so the game is to get them. And one might hope a high score involves honest, thoughtful, considerate engagement. But that’s a foolish hope, long disproven.

I don't think it's new, it's how our minds have always worked. People are just protecting their own beliefs and that's a feature. There are countless examples of this in the history.
