You are correct that vast, vast majority of folks have their opinions assigned to them. I would contend that there are—practically—no “accidental moderates” as you describe. Just smaller teams with opinions aligned along different dimensions.
It's true they are extremely rare. But so are e.g. successful startup founders, and yet I know a lot of them.
