There is a tradeoff between platform risk vs. distribution advantage. Probably the trick is is to leverage platforms, but not become dependent on them.

Agreed, see too many companies built on other companies’ solutions. It works until the platform itself supports the practices done, but as soon as the platform kills the option, your company is gone too.
