To be fair, in the 50s and 60s the top rate in the US was 90%+, and still 70%+ in the 70s.

Market reality played a bigger role too. It's easier to grow in a 300M+ market where everyone speaks the same language and had the same culture. Than to spend capital winning in 27 markets.
