Controversial/unpopular statement in 2019: Great engineers, designers, and product people should create startups that solve real problems. Startups can sometimes be good for society, and good places to work.

So solving a problem for a customer segment they can identify with an acceptable solution?

But then wouldn’t that include pyramid schemes and religions?

You’re really just saying “people should create startups that have high growth rates” Are “real problems” really only ones that “grow fast”? Can’t things grow fast that aren’t real problems like pay day loan sharks?

Hi Paul, one can finance a Michelen Star soup kitchen with supercharged VC and it might grow really fast... but it’s not a good business. Seems like we learned this lesson a few times this year with companies I’ll not name, one in particular.

To be fair, just because growth is the best litmus test (per
@paulg ) does not mean it always indicates a good business. It is just better than alternatives. FWIW I think the original business you refer to was a good one to start with (until it was treated like a tech biz) - Show replies

How do you make sales, let alone fast growing sales if you’re not solving a problem?
