Hi @paulg How does your writing process look like? Do you keep detailed notes before you start writing? How do you structure your thoughts? How much time does it take for you to write an essay?
I usually think the first paragraph or two, often as I'm walking somewhere. I come home and write them down, and keep writing. I may have a list of 5 things I want to remember to say, but never more. It can take from a couple hours to a couple months, but typically a week.

how often do your external editors/proofreaders give an insight that makes you rethink a whole piece? Any examples?

On at least three occasions that I can remember, they've caused me to kill whole essays. Many other times I've done major rewriting after someone pointed out a mistake.
