More startups have a chance of becoming really big than their founders realize (or want to admit to themselves). The reason for this apparent paradox is that it would take an enormous amount of work.

People are good at not noticing things they could do, but would be really hard.

And patience - people want it all too quickly. My first startup took 15 years to be successful!

Yet oftentimes founders with big vision deal with investors that can only see 1-2 steps ahead wanting a fast return rather than taking a bigger leap.

This is a truism. For any given startup, a given amount of work will make them successful or even extremely successful. For 99% of them this mechanical output would make the founders glow white hot and burn to ash. Harmful because undervalues importance of luck.

The biggest lesson I have learnt that "effort" is overestimated and we kind of get into a "religious" duty of putting more effort as a moral obligation. Any reasonable success of a startup is only ensured when your effort creates leverage otherwise it will be eventually wasted
