The puzzling thing about this is the right to invest. Surely founders who'd pay a "deck designer" $20-40k are the last ones you'd want to invest in.https://twitter.com/JasonrShuman/status/1207869785402486791 …

totally agree. if you can't explain your business in a few simple words, it's a bad sign (making an exception for PhDs though ;)
-
Though the alternatively bad approach is misrepresenting products / markets for simplicities sake (ie. we are uber for x) - there's definitely a happy in between for more unique or complex products / markets.

Plus, last time I checked, you can read. LOL To hear it from the entrepreneurs lips, in their words is worth more than any deck. ;-)

I’d extend this to explaining anything in conversation is a much more exacting test. Whether that be a test of another individual or a test of your own knowledge on a subject. Similar to how mastering something often comes through teaching it.

Any founder who relies on decks doesn't know their own business well enough.

Yea... and the read off of the deck as though they have no clue what their company does... crazy

I'm curious, what would your reaction be if a founder opened up their laptop with some software for you to try but didn't say a word? Software can be magical sometimes, has anyone ever done a magic trick?

Interesting & true. But I‘m wondering how can YC/ any other investor, evaluating apps at scale, include this conversational aspect in the first filter itself (within the application forms). Of course b2b (brain to brain) communication will enable this ultimately. But, for now?

Couldn't agree now. I love the 140 words test.

Maybe that works if the tech is superficial.
