Fascinating to me that coffee--how you prepare it and where you buy--it has become such an important source of virtue signaling about one's values and sophistication. Beer, too, to some extent, and wine, of course, in the past. But the variations for home prep makes coffee, king.

Studying virtue signaling could only become an econ subfield if it could be done with sophisticated mathematical or statistical tools, else publishing in the field wouldn't help an economist's career.

Fortunately, economics shows you can study anything with sophisticated mathematical tools.

Check out "The Handicap Principle" Signaling seems irrational but it's often efficient.

It already is a field in Econ. Spence won a Nobel prize for it in 2001. A good chunk of the theory is quite well developed. I agree there’s lots of scope to apply it in new situations. Khaneman’s work has unfortunately shown that being aware of it doesn’t nec reduce it though

Is that the goal? Expose people who choose to try to source their coffee ethically and beer locally so they’ll go back to Folgers and Coors?

We’d love to have economists join the research program. Philosophers and psychologists have been working on this and we’d love to hear what you think.https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0223749&fbclid=IwAR0Va5sQtJ08PP20QTLbltsD5gTXwsjU8LY6qv-L_bniJk5UXEqVeYKeLio …
