I'm sure this has been proved in 100 different variations, but to me the easiest way to understand it is geometric: if vector v is the one you care about, the projection of an orthogonal vector onto v is a point.

Mathematically most of the volume of a high dimensional object is near its surface - more parameters don't 'average' to the center. So unless you can properly estimate new ideas or put them on dials (99% you can't), fewer are better - geometrically at least.
