Saying something in an essay gets you trolled less than saying the same thing in a tweet. Partly because an essay has a sort of reading-comprehension CAPTCHA, and partly because there's no easy retweet-with-comment for an essay.

If an essay, response to any troll could be "Did you read the whole thing?"
I can tell you from a great deal of experience that that works 0% of the time, once someone has already started trolling.

Perhaps a troll vote by all commentors could curtail the impulse. A troll check box next to the like button, which gets counted on their profile next to their follower count.
