You also put more context into an essay than a tweet, so it’s harder to be misunderstood. (It’s not always on the reader’s intent / ability).

I find that my blog posts (~ essays) result in fewer *immediate* misunderstandings than tweets, but more in the long term. Are you sure you're not just seeing a similar effect, i.e. that the trolling is spread over a longer time period since readers are spread over a longer time?

That is an interesting question. Possibly. But I think people misunderstand you for different reasons than they misunderstand me.

meh, that has way less to do with the tweet/essay audience distinction and more with the fact that to make something as large as an essay become more coherent writer would have to supply all the context around some statement and comprehension increases.
