Dear young founder don’t do this (thread) Request lunch meetup to talk your startup. I agree & sit down w/ you. Bill comes, you suggest splitting w/ me. It’s the most disrespectful thing you can do. Shows you absolutely have no respect for me, my time or what you hoped to gain.
For what it's worth, I wouldn't be offended. In fact I always pay the whole tab when meeting young founders, because I have money and they may not.
Different strokes for different folks
Same meeting cld be asked for to happen in my office, which several have. But if you step up to me & say, "Let me take you to lunch" to help you, w/ the mind of me bearing cost, then you've constituted yourself into one w/ right over my money, time, energy and attention. No way!
I'm not an investor, with money+++ looking for deal flow to fill top of my funnel.

I think this is not a question of who really pays the cost of lunch. It's about mindfulness, respect and to some extent, fighting the spirit of entitlement.

6/6 times in the last 3 months the VC has refused to let me pay for lunch
and most mirrored my lunch order. If I got a burger they would get a burger, if I ordered a beer they would order a beer.
