Startup idea for whoever wants it: Now that formerly neutral(ish) "newspapers of record" have been forced to pick a side to avoid going out of business, there may be room for a new publication to serve that need. Can't say for sure it will work, but it's a beachhead.

"neutral" papers of record need neutral biz models. in the US, that came from 20th-c nat'l retail chains, whose cross-partisan clientele required that papers aim for similar cross-partisanship. the partisan papers before/after suggest ppl naturally prefer ideological news

Most people prefer ideological news, but some people want the truth. All you need for a startup idea to be viable is a group of early adopters who are currently unsatisfied by existing options, and the sort of people who want non-ideological news are classic early adopters.

How do we know that people who want non-ideological news are classic early adopters? The problem with news in general is the scale you need to sustain it. The most broken parts of the industry are in areas that don't scale - meaning local.

I don’t think ideology and “truth” always conflict. NYTimes, WSJ, Vox, even Buzzfeed etc can do great reporting, but they focus on the flaws of the other side, not both. Bias may be inevitable. Possible solution = better curation, an aggregated mix of quality content?

For local, I think there is a lot of great reporting and actionable content. It just has little reach, needs amplification. Working on a side project to address. No profit though. Profit part of problem of news. Should be more like a digital library. The curator unbiased. IMO.
