Startup idea for whoever wants it: Now that formerly neutral(ish) "newspapers of record" have been forced to pick a side to avoid going out of business, there may be room for a new publication to serve that need. Can't say for sure it will work, but it's a beachhead.

The thing about the truth is, people will often tell it for free. The challenge is that for those that understand it, it won’t appear to be objective, but will appear to, and may always carry a hint of bias. I would think it is possible to aggregate the truth tellers as a network

my views on this might be too messy for twitter but basically i think: a) lots of WSJ/NYT/WP reporting is non-ideological and sometimes offers balance to a fault—"X says the sky is blue, but Y insists..."—but i could understand if you think they're ideological about tech/SV
-
b) non-ideology in news isn't something you can provide in a falsifiable way, like 2 day delivery. it's a goal that's up for interpretation at a time when obvious facts (climate change) become ideologically associated. so i see (a) competition and (b) branding challenges.

There's a famous book by Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman that explains why this doesn't work!

The only reason we are having this discussion of neutrality v. ideology is because the Right weaponized the idea of bias - it's been used to neutralize a profession that wouldn't admit to it's own biases and to dismiss ideas it doesn't like. Time to move on to the solutions.

One of the biggest criticisms of the original Circa was that we weren’t snarky enough. It was maybe a different era. Social shared ruled all traffic and required emotion.

How do we know that people who want non-ideological news are classic early adopters? The problem with news in general is the scale you need to sustain it. The most broken parts of the industry are in areas that don't scale - meaning local.

What about when ideology and the truth happen to overlap? Would this non-ideological news source simply decline to report on it?
