This is a big part of why Wikipedia has been so successful.
Startup idea for whoever wants it: Now that formerly neutral(ish) "newspapers of record" have been forced to pick a side to avoid going out of business, there may be room for a new publication to serve that need. Can't say for sure it will work, but it's a beachhead.

I think we are starting to see this with niche areas (for instance Politico runs great industry-specific coverage on things like telecom policy and news where reporters can go very deep). It seems to be working well on those specific cases though hasn’t been tried for general.
