It makes loads of sense for divorce though - people are unhappy so they get divorced.

you could argue that pinpointing a specific event is not as important as understanding (mitigating, perhaps) the process that culminates with the event.

Evolutionary biology doesn’t seem to care about our long term happiness Only that we pass on our genes before we die Individual contentment seems to be an inside game in which one must outsmart the thinking brain

You'd think that it should. Providing a child with a safe comfortable nurturing space will make them much more resilient to ill fortune and thus will have a much higher chance of continuing to pass on genes to future generations.

The sad finding about children is a very consistent one in this literature. But one has to be careful what this implies for one's own life decisions. Deaton and Stone ask how to interpret these findings in this texthttps://voxeu.org/article/what-good-are-children …

I'm sorry but all those studies are plainly ridiculous and they dont measure what they imply they are measuring. The proof is reaction of any parent whose kid is taken away. That's all you need to know. There are many things way deeper than "self reported life satisfaction".
