Can't read the article, but why would journalists, young founders, or anyone else have that view? What can be done to correct it?
-
Probably because they read about companies like WeWork?

Doesn't it kind of depend on what one's goals are? If your goal is to actually deliver some long-term value to the world then sure. But there are also a fair number of ppl who's goal is to make it out like a bandit. In that scenario hype is pretty important no?

Generally I’m a big fan of the FT but their technology coverage is generally very poor. Before investing in a public tech stock I like to make sure the FT has criticised it which is always an indication it’s a good buy.

Hype (and its politer cousin 'belief') does give SV the edge though when it comes to raising capital which then creates a virtuous circle. eg The fact that a company is SV based or has SV backers is a validator and will open doors vs a Paris based VC.
